Animals and birds transportation

Conditions of the animals transportation must be agreed with representatives of the airline. According to the Order of the Ministry of agriculture of the Russian Federation No. 422 of November 16, 2006 animals can be transported only under condition of obligatory registration of veterinary certificate form ¹1. After crossing the border of the Russian Federation this document at border veterinary clinic is changing in the international veterinary certificate. Accompanying veterinary documents are issued for all animals to confirm their health, identity, and the epizootic well-being of the territory from which they are exported.

Veterinary requirements for registration of accompanying documents.

The pet has to be clinically healthy and has compulsory vaccinations, veterinary treatments and laboratory and diagnostic studies to obtain the veterinary certificate form ¹1. According to the current veterinary requirements of the Russian Federation:

  • for dogs and cats over 3 months it is mandatory to be inoculated against rabies and laboratory studies on helminthes infections (or deworming);
  • for cats – fluorescence diagnosis ringworm;
  • for birds – studies on the psittacosis, salmonellosis, and avian influenza.

Vaccinations must be done within the current year not later than 30 days prior to the issuing of certificates. In the case of a booster vaccination (re-vaccination) the accompanying document may be issued no earlier than 14 days. Laboratory tests must be conducted within one month before departure. The statute of limitations of laboratory tests may not exceed 2 months. Fluorescent diagnosis of ringworm is performed immediately before the registration of veterinary certificates. Since 2007, the EU allows the importation of animals into its territory only if there is an electronic microchip that identifies the animal.

The procedure for obtaining a veterinary reference or evidence:

To obtain a veterinary accompanying document, the owner of the animal is drawn in a veterinary institution of the place of actual residence, with the obligatory picture of the animal for clinical inspection by veterinary doctor. In the presence of vaccination, laboratory tests and veterinary treatments, a pet owner gives a veterinary certificate and conclusions (examination) accredited veterinary laboratories confirming diagnosis and veterinary-preventive measures.

Registration of veterinary certificate form No. 1 for travel abroad:

Animals can go abroad at performance of veterinary requirements of the Russian Federation listed above, and in accordance with the veterinary requirements of the host country. These requirements can vary, so the pet owner must update the information in the relevant embassy when planning foreign travel and to represent these requirements the vet no later than 30 days before the trip. This time period is set for the quarantine of the animal before departure and to have been made missing animal veterinary treatment, researches and vaccinations. In case of discrepancies between the veterinary requirements of the Russian Federation and the host country, the veterinarian carries out additional activities on preparation of the animal.

It is necessary to learn and perform all the information correctly to avoid unnecessary troubles in the road. In some countries, such as, for example, the UK, Australia, Canada, Norway, Ireland, Sweden veterinary rules are extremely hard and require quarantine of animals upon entry into the country within 1 to 18 months at the expense of the owner of the animal. In these cases it is necessary to assess in advance their capabilities and the feasibility of the trip together with your pet.

Passengers with animals must arrive at the airport before the check-in and ask at the information desk on the first floor of the terminal.

The weight of the animals and birds shall be paid for as excess baggage. For each kilogram weight of the animal along with the cage will be charged according to the rate. The cost of excess baggage can be checked in airlines.

Conditions of carriage:

  • animals and birds must be transported in a sturdy container (cage), with access of air, and a safe lock;
  • the bottom of the container (cage) must be dense, waterproof and covered with absorbent material;
  • a container (cage) must exclude spillage of the absorbent material;
  • bird cage should be covered with a dense opaque cloth;
  • dimensions of the container for transporting animals in the aircraft cabin should not exceed 115 cm in three dimensions.
